What are patent renewal fees?

  • After your patent has been granted, and in some cases before, you will be required to pay fees to keep it active. These are called annuities, maintenance fees or renewal fees.
  • In most countries these fees are due every year, generally on or around the date of application, and are called annuities.
  • In the US these fees are due three times during the life of the patent (3.5 years after grant, 7.5 years after grant and 11.5 years after grant) and are called maintenance fees.

Why look up renewal fee information?

  • Due Diligence – know how much a portfolio will cost to maintain before you close the deal
  • Budgeting – estimate your expenses for the remaining life of the patent
  • Avoid overpayment to your renewal fee payment service provider – knowing the amount of the actual fees can give you leverage for negotiating better rates with your service provider, and also help you to avoid overcharging by unscrupulous providers.
